AMG REVIEW: Armed with a title pun so delicious it's a wonder it took him so long to come up with it, 1983's Stevedore opens with a tougher-sounding new version of Phonography's "I Want You in My Life" that's nearly the equal of the more bubblegummy original. That edge is apparent on much of the rest of the album, which largely consists of sharp, concise pop songs in a variety of styles ranging from the moody dance rock of "Female Impact" and "Nice Pastel Remix" to the lo-fi punkiness of "Naked" and the quirky psychedelic pop of "Somewhere in the Stars," which overlays an XTC-like pop song with a found-sound conversation that pans between the speakers with no obvious connection to the song itself. The one potentially overindulgent moment is the ten-minute stream-of-consciousness rant "I'm My Own Ghost," but even that's saved by the cut-up music collage underneath the vocals. Though Stevedore doesn't add any stone classics to the R. Stevie Moore canon, it's a thoroughly enjoyable listen.
