AMG REVIEW: A fairly typical circa-1984 entry in R. Stevie Moore's oeuvre, Kaffeeklatsch combines instrumentals in a wide variety of styles
(from the clattering new wave synth-pop of "Circus Tickets" to the atmospheric, U.K.-style dance-rock of "Martyrdom") mixed with a small handful of quirky pop songs and several reworkings of earlier Moore classics. Of the latter, the oddest and most surprisingly effective is a version of 1978's "Ethan Sequence," made up entirely of various friends and relations reciting the lyrics over the phone over a skeletal synthesizer re-creation of the melody; the highlight of the former is the opening "Think About Living With Me," which recalls the more manic side of Todd Rundgren's early-'70s work. The real appeal of the expanded two-CD reissue is the addition of two live sets from 1984: a solidly entertaining club gig, and a set recorded for a New York City cable access show that features one of the most relaxed and charming interviews Moore has ever given.
