AMG REVIEW: Even by R. Stevie Moore's standards, 1997's Disturbed is pretty weird. The recurring thread of the two-disc set is a recording of a 1978 phone call between Moore and a pre-MTV Curt Loader, discussing Moore's recent move to New Jersey and scheduling a meeting and interview. In the context of this rambling, unfocused set, the unspoken question seems to be "What happened here?" In between segments of the phone call and other odd found-sound and dialogue fragments come the by now requisite selection of unexpected covers, ranging from a delightful power pop take on Allan Sherman's novelty classic "Hello Muddah Hello Faddah" and a winningly jangly version of the Herman's Hermits nugget "The Man with the Cigar" to the Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory standard "Pure Imagination" and King Crimson's cryptically funky "Elephant Talk." Interspersed alongside these are original gems like the moody guitar instrumental "Madeline" and the fascinating "Just As I Am/Doxology," which blends a traditional choral hymn with a largely electronic dub-influenced post-punk soundscape. Disturbed is all over the place and occasionally somewhat true to its title — the a cappella "Reheat" is just plain freaky; but with a bit of patience, its charms become clearer.
