amglogo.gif AMG REVIEW: In the mid-'80s, spurred by a new burst of interest from his successful releases on the French label New Rose, R. Stevie Moore was at one of his all-time creative peaks. 1986's All Well and Good, amazingly enough, the product of a single month's work while Moore was writing and demoing the songs that would appear on his 1987 album Teenage Spectacular, is one of the fruits of this frenzied activity, a 60-track double CD (in its expanded reissued form) that's among his strongest releases from this period. Fans of Moore's LP and CD compilations will recognize many of these songs, including the first appearances of the utterly beautiful, tranquil guitar reverie "It's What You Do (It's Not What You Are)," the quirky synth-country hybrid "Elation Damnation," the insistently catchy dance-rock instrumental "The Clinch" and early demos of the title track (a longtime fan favorite) and the then-topical "Baby On Board." (Note that this predates the song of the same title that figures prominently in a classic episode of The Simpsons.) One particular highlight is the brilliantly poppy "Alecia," one of Moore's most popular and most controversial songs. (The song is about the singer's love for an 11-year-old girl, but as Moore quite rightly points out, we don't have any idea how old the singer is supposed to be.) In typical R. Stevie Moore style, the killer pop songs and intriguing instrumental experiments are interspersed with short bursts of found tape and home recordings that put the work into the context of the artist's life.
